Editorial Work

My first experience with the world of print publishing and design was as a production assistant for the Old Gold & Black. The following semester I was promoted to lead my own section as the life editor. From there I served on the executive board where I spearheaded the creation of The Magnolia, an arts & culture magazine of the Old Gold & Black

The Magnolia | An Arts & Culture Magazine

The Fall 2022 edition was awarded the CMA 2023 2nd Place Best Magazine at a 4-Year School

The Magnolia is a magazine I created, led, and designed through the Old Gold & Black. The magazine is a once-a-semester print publication centered around a specific theme. The inaugural edition of The Magnolia featured the stories of a underrepresented community on campus, the first generation community. Working with a creative team, I planned and designed the 16 pages with an intent to be creative and to reach all facets of life on campus. My last and most recent edition was as 60-page issue focused on hard-hitting journalism to uncover the roots of gentrification and how college students explicitly and implicitly contribute to it.

IN THE WORKS: Following the release of the Spring 2023 edition of The Magnolia, it was announced by Coffee Park Airstream of Winston-Salem that a scholarship foundation under the name of Selinna Tran would be established for future Magnolia creators.

The Life Section | Making it My Own

When I joined the Life section as an editor, I had the desire to make it my own. And as readers of the Old Gold & Black can attest to, the section has flourished with creativity and is a space for ideas, reflection, and thoughts on life. One of my most meaningful contributions to the section was creating the “Life Through the Lens” column that provided a safe space for minority voices on campus to share life through their lens.
